Christmas is right around the corner! Yes, I’m one of those people who buy their Christmas tree on Black Friday. It’s my favorite time of the year! Each year I go with a theme for our tree and I plan out the color scheme of the ornaments to make it look fancy. This year, now that we have a two year old and he’s starting to understand what holidays are, I think it’s the perfect time to change up our routine and go with a more kid-friendly tree. I remember growing up we bought ornaments year round, or during family vacations, and we sat down as a family to make decorations for the tree after Thanksgiving passed by. I now am beginning to start new traditions for my little family, and it’s so much fun! So I’m saying goodbye to the perfectly planned out tree, and starting Christmas 2016 off with a DIY bang!
Today I am going to show you how easy it is to make your own ornaments! I’ll have several ornament posts so stick around!
DIY Wood Slice Ornament
Black chalk paint
White paint pen
This craft seriously took me like 20 minutes total, so try it out!
I bought my wood slices at Hobby Lobby (you can get them at Joann’s or Michaels too. Or if you’re feeling really DIY-ish you can go all out and chop your own wood slices!) For $4.99 for a pack of four. I find that to be a pretty decent price since wood everything is becoming so popular these days. My chalk paint was $7 at Joanns and my paint pen was around $5. I already had the foam brush.
Start by painting a circle on each slab with your foam brush. Easy, just leave a wood border around the edge. You can go back after it dries and fix any blemishes.
Then, use your white pen and draw whatever design you’d like!! It’s THAT simple! I looked around on Pinterest for ideas and came up with these four and I liked the way they all went together pretty well. They dried fairly quickly and I got a little bit of black chalk paint on the twine, but I’m planning on swapping out the twine for a red and white striped twine when it gets closer to Christmas. So I wasn’t too worried about that.
I love how cute they turned out! Can’t wait to see how they look hung up on our Christmas tree. I will definitely be making more ornaments before Christmas comes around so stay tuned!!
